Ramsey Writing Services

One of us can explain the most complicated parts of American history to fourth graders… and make them like it. The other can follow the logic of a knitting pattern and edit a sentence without editing out the writer’s voice. 

Ramsey Writing Services is a writing and editing company based in New Kent County, Virginia. Alan Ramsey writes copy and content for businesses and organizations to help them communicate to their audience. Laurie Ramsey edits copy for businesses, as well as academic and creative work.

Writing and editing are related, though they aren’t the same job… and we handle both.  

Alan’s work begins by learning what the client needs to say and who needs to hear it. Laurie works with material that has already been written. She checks grammar and punctuation, but she also pays attention to clarity, consistency, and whether the details hold together.

Clients can work with Alan, Laurie, or both. When a project needs both writing and editing, Alan develops the material and Laurie reviews it with a separate editorial eye.

About Our Staff:

I’m Alan, and I’m an American Writers and Artists Institute (AWAI) Verified Email, Funnel, Online Ad, Lead-Gen, and Editorial/Content Marketing Copywriter. I’m a member of the Professional Writers’ Alliance, and the Director of Education for the New Kent Chamber of Commerce. I assist with editing as well.

Before starting Ramsey Writing Services, I worked in several very different fields, each of which taught me how to communicate with all sorts of people about all manner of topics.

How diverse? Well, I’ve worked in a factory, been a railroad locomotive engineer, and worked as a museum professional supervising historic interpreters who led school group tours at the largest living history museum in the nation. That last one could be a bit like herding cats, but after learning to hold the attention of a group of fourth graders and get them to understand our complex history, and then teaching others to do the same, I realized I could communicate with anyone about most anything. Now I use that skill to help clients communicate through writing. 

Beyond work, I constantly look to learn new things, which is why I love to learn about my clients and their businesses. I also enjoy hiking, reading, the ocean, exploring the world around us, and the Oxford comma.  I’m an avid model railroader and home cook.

Hi, I’m Lauren, but most people call me Laurie. I am an AWAI-trained and certified copyeditor with an eclectic and varied set of interests. If you’ve been having trouble finding the right copyeditor for what you’ve written, I might be exactly what you’re looking for.

I’m an experienced knitter, crocheter, and spinner, so if you’ve been struggling to find a copyeditor who can tackle grammar right along with knitting and crochet notation, drop me a line. I even wrote a stocking pattern inspired by a book series I enjoyed, and Interweave published it in the Fall 2011 issue of Knitting Traditions magazine.

My background is in history. During my senior year of college, professors from two different classes recommended that I submit papers for consideration for a departmental writing award. One of those papers won! I have spent most of my adult professional life working at a living history museum, first interacting with guests and then working in the costume department. I understand history, especially historical clothing, so whether you’ve written an academic paper or a historical romance, I can help.

I developed a love of the paranormal and unexplained at a pretty young age, so if you’ve written about a topic that you’re worried won’t be taken seriously or treated with respect, please give me a try. I’ll approach your work with dignity and an open mind.

My love of grammar came to me later in life, completely by accident, during the COVID shutdowns, and I haven’t looked back! If you have something like a single blog post or résumé that needs a little bit of grammar love, don’t hesitate to reach out. That’s a great way to give me a try!
